n-3 PUFA and sterols in the regulation of tumor progression, in prognosis and in the response to anticancer treatments
Cellular and molecular mechanisms by which lipids modulate cancer progression will be examined in vivo (tissues obtained from patients and animal models of cancer), ex vivo (culture of animal- and patient-derived tumor explants) and in vitro (primary cultures of cancer cells and co-cultures with non-cancer cell types such as adipocytes). Importantly, our project will use patient-derived tissues to provide a better understanding of the role of lipids with a focus of n-3 PUFA, sterols and cardiolipins. In addition, tumor tissues will allow us to prepare patient-derived primary cultures of cancer cells and test the role of lipids on their properties. The overall objective is to develop new dietary and pharmacological strategies using lipid supplementation (for lipids identified as being associated with a better prognostic) or modulation of lipid metabolism to prevent cancer progression and improve response to regular anticancer treatments (chemo- and hormone-therapies).
